Steam punk inspired “Atomic Heart” series
“Atomic heart” series by Boston Artist can’t be described better than this insightful quote: “Steampunk is…a joyous fantasy of the past, allowing us to revel in a nostalgia for what never was.”
―
Steam Punk inspired Atomic Heart series was born during Covid-19 pandemic lockdown which deeply shook our views on the world and our self. While preparing for new composite portrait project with botanical backgrounds Boston artist learned about stay-at–home order. Being unable to do outside photoshoots, LGBTQ photographer started to make background images using home machinery as prototypes. Those steam punk encouraged images were perfect backgrounds for the reflection of new pandemic realities. While outside activities became unavailable, global society started inevitable deep fusion with technology underway to rule our life opening door for fresh explorations in steam punk genre. The fact that living environment shrank to the walls of a house forced us to expend our experience through machinery and imagination. Although this Steam Punk-inspired portraiture series had started during lock down times, it totally reflects current human condition. One model becomes half-cyborg merging with overpowering technology while another holding a toy gun after being affected by too many mystery shows she watched during lockdown. The models express hope, power, self-healing, curiosity and self-reflection but never a defeat by the circumstances. Here you can enjoy limited selection of Steam Punk inspired series by Boston artist Dmitriy Gushchin.
Although many of the images created by Boston steam punk portrait photographer are banned by Instagram and some other social platforms as “containing nudity”, Dmitriy believes that it is just the latest Instagram anti-LGBTQ campaign we all have to fight against together. Boston artist never thought that “Obscure Dream Liberation” will be a beginning of “Instagram nightmare” series.
