Portraits by gay portrait photographer Dmitriy Gushchin
While working on portrait, photographer Dmitriy Gushchin alwais keeps in mind the famous quote: “The reason some portraits don’t look true to life is that some people make no effort to resemble their pictures.”

Creating a gay portrait is never an easy task. Portraiture itself is among the most demanding fields in modern art, requiring a delicate balance between artistic expression and honoring the integrity of the model. For Boston-based queer photo artist Dmitriy Gushchin, this challenge is ever-present. Some portraits emerge effortlessly—moments when the subject opens their soul and the camera simply captures that fleeting truth. Yet conceptual portraits often demand hours of exploration, countless shifts between ideas, and hundreds of frames, only to select a single image that embodies the vision. The process of choosing that one definitive shot is itself a painful act of discernment.
As a composite photographer, Dmitriy’s work extends far beyond the moment of capture. His meticulous post-production process, built upon self-developed enhancement techniques, transforms ordinary portraits into singular works of art. These methods have become his signature, distinguishing his gay portraiture as both technically innovative and emotionally resonant.
Here you will find a limited selection of Dmitriy’s portraits—examples of his distinctive skill and dedication to the craft. Each image is not merely a photograph, but a unique artwork that reflects the complexity of queer identity, the vulnerability of the subject, and the artist’s relentless pursuit of truth through beauty.
On this page you can find some of the examples of Dmitriy Gushchin’s distinctive skills of portrait photographer.
Although many of the images created by Boston-based gay photo artist Dmitriy Gushchin have been banned by Instagram and other social platforms under the label of “containing nudity,” Dmitriy sees this as part of a broader pattern of anti-LGBTQ censorship. What began as his visionary series “Obscure Dream Liberation” has unexpectedly turned into the “Instagram Nightmare”—a struggle against the silencing of queer artistic expression in digital spaces.
Currently, Dmitriy’s Instagram account is “shadow blocked,” appearing private to non-subscribers and limiting the visibility of his work. This suppression highlights the urgent need to defend LGBTQ+ rights and freedom of expression. Art should never be censored simply for its honesty, vulnerability, or celebration of queer identity.
By subscribing and following accounts like Dmitriy’s, you stand in solidarity with queer artists who refuse to be erased. He is not alone—this is a collective fight, and every voice matters. Together, we can resist censorship and affirm the power of queer creativity.
