Bio
Dmitriy Gushchin is a Boston-based fine art photographer and digital artist creating staged photographic tableaux that explore queer identity, mythology, symbolism, and personal transformation. Born in the Soviet Union and later relocating to the United States, his practice combines studio photography, theatrical staging, and digital compositing to construct cinematic visual narratives. His work has been exhibited internationally across the United States, Europe, and the Middle East, including museum exhibitions at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, the Monmouth Museum, and the Alexandria Museum of Art.
Background
Gushchin began photographing at an early age, learning black-and-white film processes and darkroom techniques under the guidance of his father. Early exposure to science, music, and visual culture shaped a multidisciplinary approach that later expanded into photography, design, and digital image-making. Over time, photography became the primary medium through which he could merge storytelling, symbolism, and staged performance.
His current work draws on a wide range of influences, including classical painting, religious iconography, tarot archetypes, and fashion photography. By combining physical studio photography with digital compositing, he creates carefully constructed environments that blur the boundaries between reality and imagination. Across his projects, Gushchin is interested in how identity is shaped by cultural narratives, and how visual mythology can be reimagined to reflect contemporary queer experience.
