Dmitriy has his own unique style of composite photography blending up to 30 different photo shots into one final artwork. Dmitriy does his photo shooting in home studio in Boston as well as all over United States and the world including Thailand, Japan, South Korea, France, Peru, Mexico, China, Indonesia, Cambodia, etc. Dmitriy can not imagine going on a trip without his camera, constantly taking photos.

On many occasions Dmitriy needs to take photos of ordinary objects, like fruits or fish purchased in supermarket. Or sometimes he gets busy with macro photography taking pictures of bugs, tarantulas, butterflies, watch mechanisms and everything else might be needed for his gay art creation.

Dmitriy always has his sketch book with him. Every time he has inspirational dream, idea or a vision he carefully sketches and makes a list of all props and photo shots needed for new photograph. Or quite often Dmitriy has to do a research  on a subject of a new artwork.

After picking all the necessary elements from newly made images and his extensive photo library for his next gay photography creation, Dmitriy carefully blends them using sophisticated digital process. After years of digital photo compositing gay artist developed his own distinctive methods and techniques. Dmitriy compares his compositing process to DJing.

The outcome of this creative approach is striking painting-like photo images. Those photographs generate energy resonance with the viewer bringing their/her/his imagination throughout space and time whether it is not-so-simple portrait, steampunk composite or biblical story interpretation.

“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”

~ Confucius

Photographer Dmitriy Gushchin has very complex background and personal history. Ethnically he is Russian and Ukrainian mix. This fact certainly brought a lot of conflict into his family relationships due to the current war in Ukraine. Although Dmitriy started practicing photography since he was 12 years old boy, but concurrently he earned his Masters Degree in Physics and later became Doctor of Naturopathy. At the same time, Dmitriy’s great grand mother was a Witch Doctor who passed him her spiritual energy. Because of that Dmitriy became a spiritual healer and Esoteric Philosophy teacher and educator since he was 19 years old.

Above said, grown in homophobic Soviet Union, gay artist has a complex message to deliver. Dmitriy’s photo art opens dialog with the viewer about attraction and sexual identity, human spirit and technological domination, mythology and history, death and desire, attraction and spirituality, religion and science.

Absolutely necessary part of composite photography is taking photos of the objects. On the right you can see the image reflecting this process in Dmitriy’s home studio.

“Tango,” a part of “Mythos” series.

“Myth is much more important and true than history. History is just journalism and you know how reliable that is.”

~ Joseph Campbell

The first part of Dmitriy’s queer art portfolio is “Mythos” series

The first part of portfolio is “Mythos”. All art photographs presented in this series are inspired by myths, legends, artist’s dreams, music and literature. Dmitriy believes that cross-referencing is important part of art form which opens doors for artist’s interpretation and gives extra ability voicing the message.

Myth gives a power to cross borders, cultures and time to discover and extract hidden gems of humanity.

"When you take technology and mix it with art, you always come up with something innovative."

~Robert Rodriguez

The next part of Dmitriy’s queer art portfolio is “Atomic Heart” series.

While preparing for new composite portrait project with botanical backgrounds the artist learned about stay-at–home order due to Covid-19 pandemics. Being unable to do outside photoshoots, the artist started to make background images using home machinery as prototypes. They were perfect for the reflection of new pandemic realities. This Steampunk-inspired composite portraiture reveals the feelings of being trapped and lost in new veracity.

“Time can be a greedy thing-sometimes it steals the details for itself.”

~Khaled Hosseini

The next series in gay photographer portfolio is “Time Rendezvous”.

This is another series of queer photography born during lock-down. It reflects gay photographer’s obsession with antique broken watch mechanisms. They became mesmerizing backgrounds symbolizing inevitable and dangerous, but at the same time mysterious and challenging flow of time. Most of the photographs in this section are black-and-white.

“I dream my painting and I paint my dream.”

~Vincent Willem van Gogh

Another fascinating section in queer artist portfolio is “Obscure Dream Liberation”

This series is inspired by dreams, where creativity of subconsciousness is the key. This is where a lot of inspiration for Dmitriy’s art is coming from. Since the childhood Dmitriy had a natural ability for Lucid Dreaming. Lucid Dreaming became the artist’s realm  where he feels connection to him self the most. There are no rules in there, he can truly be  him self. Dreams, even nightmares, are powerful source of energy, inspiration, healing, personal liberation and the best opportunity for self-connection. The photographer hopes that the viewers can relate and cherish that energy as much as him.
